History of the Hammond Organ

The Hammond organ was created by the American inventor Laurens Hammond in 1935 as an alternative to the cumbersome and expensive pipe organ. The basic principle behind the Hammond organ is the “Tonewheel Generator”, which produces sound similar to a traditional pipe organ. The Hammond organ was a game changer in the technology of music. The ‘50s were the height of the Hammond organ popularity, thanks to world-famous artists such as Jimmy Smith, Brian Auger, Billy Preston and many more; these artists were fundamental to the growth of Gospel, Blues, Jazz and Rock.

Hammond Organs are divided into two main families: Consoles and Spinets, the main difference being that Consoles have 61 keys while Spinets have 44.

The console model born in 1935 was named Model A, with more models coming afterward such as the famous Model B3

The Model B3 first appeared in 1955 and its revolutionary feature was the addition of the Percussion Kit. This accessory enhanced the sound of Consoles and Spinets.
